Pressure vessel certifications help industrial buyers evaluate code construction, a manufacturer’s quality management system and the records supplied with equipment. The ASME U stamp, ISO 9001 and National Board registration each address a different part of that review.
ASME certification relates to construction under the applicable pressure vessel code. ISO 9001 certification addresses the manufacturer’s quality management system. National Board registration establishes a permanent record of a registered item’s construction documentation. Understanding these roles helps engineers, OEMs and purchasing teams specify the right requirements for their projects.

Pressure Vessel Certifications at a Glance
| Requirement | What it addresses | What buyers should check |
| ASME U stamp | Code construction of pressure vessels under ASME Section VIII Division 1. | Current manufacturer authorization, vessel certification marking and the applicable Manufacturer’s Data Report. |
| ISO 9001 | The organization’s quality management system within its certified scope. | The current certificate, covered location, scope and certification body. |
| National Board registration | Registration and permanent retention of construction data reports for the item. | The vessel’s NB marking and registration number, matched to its registered data report. |
What Does the ASME U Stamp Mean?
The ASME U stamp is the familiar term for the ASME Certification Mark used with the U designator. It identifies pressure vessels constructed and certified under ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, Division 1 by an authorized certificate holder.
ASME evaluates the manufacturer’s quality control system for the authorized scope. The marking on an individual vessel represents its certification to the applicable construction rules. A company’s authorization and a particular vessel’s certification are therefore related, but buyers should verify both.
The construction code covers design, materials, fabrication, inspection and testing. Required activities depend on the vessel and project specification, and include applicable examination and pressure testing. Read ASME’s Section VIII Division 1 overview for the scope of the construction rules.
Authorized inspection forms part of this process. Before placing an order, ask the manufacturer to identify the inspection arrangements and the records included with the completed vessel.
Checking the Nameplate and Data Report
Compare the completed nameplate with the Manufacturer’s Data Report. Check the manufacturer, serial number, certification marking and stated pressure and temperature limits, along with registration details where applicable. A heat exchanger can have separate shell-side and tube-side ratings.
ISO 9001 for Pressure Vessel Manufacturers
ISO 9001 sets requirements for a quality management system. Certification involves an independent certification body auditing that system against the standard within the stated scope. ISO publishes the standard; it does not issue company certifications itself.
For pressure vessel manufacturers, this framework supports a consistent approach to reviewing customer requirements, controlling documents, managing suppliers, evaluating performance and correcting problems. It helps buyers assess how the organization manages the work surrounding fabrication.
ISO 9001 certification does not establish an individual vessel’s pressure rating or certify its construction to ASME Section VIII. The purchase specification still needs to identify the required construction code, inspection and registration. ISO’s supply-chain guidance distinguishes management system conformity from product conformity.
When evaluating a supplier, check that the certificate covers the relevant site and activities. A scope covering pressure vessel design, manufacture and assembly is more useful for this purchase than a certificate covering unrelated operations.
What Is National Board Registration?
National Board registration creates a permanent record of a pressure-retaining item’s construction documentation. For an ASME pressure vessel, the registered Manufacturer’s Data Report records the item’s certified construction and inspection information.
An authorized manufacturer applies the National Board symbol and registration number to the item and includes that number on the data report submitted for permanent retention. The registration number identifies the item within the manufacturer’s registration records; it should be considered together with the manufacturer’s identity.
For buyers, this gives a way to connect the delivered vessel to its registered construction record. Ask for the completed data report and confirm that its identification matches the equipment. A manufacturer’s authorization to register vessels does not establish that every vessel it supplies has been registered.
Comparing ASME ISO 9001 and National Board
ASME vs ISO 9001
When evaluating a supplier, ASME and ISO 9001 serve different purposes. ASME U authorization supports the manufacture and certification of pressure vessels to ASME Section VIII, Division 1. ISO 9001 certification addresses the organization’s quality management system within its certified scope. A manufacturer can hold both. However, ISO 9001 does not replace the ASME certification required for a U-stamped vessel.
ASME U Stamp vs National Board Registration
The ASME U stamp certifies code construction; National Board registration preserves the item’s certified construction record. A vessel can carry ASME certification marking and also be registered with the National Board. When the project requires both, specify both and verify the marking and documentation at delivery. Do not assume National Board registration follows automatically from an ASME U stamp.
Which Pressure Vessel Certifications Should You Specify?
Define the requirements in the enquiry so suppliers can include the correct work and documentation. Before fabrication, confirm:
- The destination province, state or country and the applicable jurisdictional requirements.
- The construction code and edition, and whether ASME U certification is specified.
- Whether National Board registration is required by the jurisdiction or purchase specification.
- Any supplier qualification requirement for ISO 9001, including the relevant certificate scope.
- The examination, pressure testing, inspection hold points and customer review requirements.
- The delivery records, including the applicable data report and agreed supporting documents.
Canadian projects may also require design registration and a Canadian Registration Number (CRN). This is a separate jurisdictional matter; ISO 9001 certification and National Board registration do not replace it. See TSSA’s explanation of CRNs for the Ontario context, and confirm the requirements and exemptions for the installation location.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Manufacturer Hold All Three?
Yes. A manufacturer can hold ASME U authorization, an ISO 9001 certificate and National Board authorization to register pressure vessels. For each order, verify which certifications and registration apply to the equipment being supplied.
Where Should Buyers Verify ISO 9001 Certification?
Check the manufacturer’s current quality management system certificate, including its scope and covered location. Vessel nameplate markings and construction data reports serve separate purposes and do not establish the manufacturer’s ISO 9001 certification.
Is the National Board R Stamp the Same as Registration?
No. The National Board R Certificate of Authorization concerns repairs and alterations to pressure-retaining equipment under its authorized scope. The R certificate number identifies the repair organization’s authorization. It is different from the National Board registration number of an individual vessel.
